The Hidden Job Market Is Real—Here's How to Access It
I'm going to say something that might sting a little:
The jobs you're applying to online? A lot of them are already spoken for.
Not all of them. But more than you'd think.
Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes:
A hiring manager mentions to their team, "We're going to need someone for this role soon." Word spreads internally. Someone knows someone. A referral comes in. By the time the job is posted publicly, there's already a front-runner.
You're not losing to better candidates. You're losing to candidates who got there first.
This is the hidden job market. And if you're only applying online, you're missing the majority of opportunities.
So how do you access it?
Let me show you what's actually working, with real examples from my clients.
1. Show Up Where the Conversations Are Happening
One of my clients had been job searching for months with little traction. She decided to attend a networking event in her industry, not because there was a specific job posted, but because she knew she needed to expand her reach.
At that event, she struck up a conversation with someone who happened to work directly with the hiring manager for a role she'd been eyeing.
That conversation turned into an introduction. The introduction turned into an interview. The interview turned into an offer.
She didn't apply online. She showed up.
2. Become a Familiar Name Before You're a Candidate
Another client took a different approach. She started showing up consistently on LinkedIn—posting about her expertise, commenting thoughtfully on posts from people at her target companies, and engaging with hiring managers in her space.
When she eventually applied for a role, her name wasn't new to them. They'd seen her in their comments. They'd read her takes. She felt familiar before they ever met her.
That familiarity turned into an interview. And that interview turned into an offer.
She didn't just apply. She built visibility first.
3. Pour Into Your Existing Network
A third client wasn't sure where to start. So we went back to basics: his existing network.
He started reconnecting with former colleagues, old managers, and people he'd worked with over the years. Not pitching. Just catching up. Sharing what he was looking for. Asking how they were doing.
What he discovered surprised him: he had way more connections willing to refer him than he realized. People he hadn't talked to in years were happy to make introductions, because he'd built real relationships along the way.
Those referrals led to interviews. And ultimately, an offer in his target industry and role.
He didn't need to build a new network. He needed to activate the one he already had.
The Common Thread?
None of these clients got their offer from a cold application.
They got it by:
-
Showing up in rooms (virtual and in-person) where opportunities live
-
Building visibility before they needed it
-
Leaning into relationships instead of relying on algorithms
How to Start Showing Up on LinkedIn (Even If You're Not Sure What to Say)
You don't need to go viral. You don't need to post every day. You just need to be present.
Here's a simple framework:
1. Comment before you post. Find 3-5 people in your target industry or at your target companies. Engage with their content. Add a thoughtful take. Ask a genuine question. Do this daily for two weeks before you ever post yourself.
2. Share what you're learning. You don't need to be an expert. Share an article that resonated. Talk about a challenge you're navigating. Reflect on something you learned in your career. Authenticity > polish.
3. Let people know you're looking (strategically). You don't have to blast "I'm looking for a job!" But you can say: "I'm exploring new opportunities in [X space] and would love to connect with others in this world." It opens doors without desperation. (Use an Open to Work Template like my example below)

4. Engage with hiring managers and recruiters. Follow them. Comment on their posts. When you eventually apply or reach out, you won't be a stranger.
The Bottom Line
The hidden job market isn't a secret club. It's just a different game.
It rewards consistency over volume. Relationships over applications. Visibility over invisibility.
If your job search has felt like shouting into the void, this is your sign to try a different approach.
Stop waiting to be found.
Start showing up where the opportunities actually are.
