The Fall Hiring Playbook (Don't Wait for January)
Happy Labor Day weekend, and welcome back to Rise & Shine. ☀️
I hope your weekend was as relaxing as mine! For once we didn't have ANYTHING planned all weekend and I've never felt more rested.
So, grab a fresh cup of coffee, find a quiet spot on the porch or at the kitchen counter, and let yourself take a real breath. Holiday weekends are meant for resting, unplugging, and recharging with family.
Before the holiday wraps up and Tuesday morning arrives, there is a mindset shift we need to talk through.
Every September around Labor Day, I hear the exact same assumption from talented professionals:
"Summer is over, the holidays are right around the corner, and companies are wrapping up their year. Hiring has basically paused until January. I might as well put my search on hold and hit it hard in the new year."
Taking a break when you are burned out makes complete sense. Putting your search on pause because you believe companies stop hiring in the fall does NOT.
Believing hiring stops in the fall is an expensive misconception in a job search.
Here is the corporate reality behind company doors between September and the holidays:
-
"Use-it-or-lose-it" headcount budgets. Department heads fought hard to secure headcount. If they do not fill those seats before year-end, corporate budget policies often reassign or eliminate the opening for the following year. Leaders want those offers signed now.
-
The holiday deadline. Managers know that once the Thanksgiving and December holiday freeze sets in, hiring grinds to a halt. They face a narrow window right now to interview, select, and extend offers so new hires are fully onboarded for the new year.
-
Lower competition. Because so many candidates buy into the January myth and pause their search, the volume of active applicants drops during the late fall months. (heading in to November and December) (Source: Hiring Lab)
Now look at why January is a trap:
Every professional who pressed pause in September returns to job boards at the exact same moment in January. That creates an applicant surge with heavy competition. At the same time, HR administrative delays and corporate budget approval lags slow hiring decisions down.
Waiting for January means voluntarily stepping into a crowded, delayed market.
The Fall Search Action Sprint
If you want to capitalize on this fall window, here are actionable pillars to focus on starting this week:
Direct hiring manager outreach
-
Bypass crowded ATS queues by connecting directly with the leaders who manage the roles you want. Reach out with a concise note about their current team priorities, how your background solves the challenges they are tackling, and an invitation to connect.
High-ROI positioning
-
Fall hires are brought in to solve urgent year-end bottlenecks. Position your experience around immediate impact and low ramp-up time. Keep your resume and interview narratives focused on how quickly you integrate into workflows and deliver measurable results.
Re-engaging "silver medal" interviews and warm past contacts
-
Revisit companies where you had strong interview conversations, along with warm contacts in your network. If you landed in 2nd place, don't give up on them if you really connected. Reach back out, see what has shifted in their business or what is coming up in the next few months.
Here is a low-pressure check-in script you can use:
"Hi [Name], I hope you had a great summer. With teams kicking off their fall initiatives, I wanted to check in and see how priorities are shaping up on your end. If you have a few minutes in the coming weeks, I would love to catch up."
Practical self-audit steps for this week:
-
Audit your resume and messaging to ensure you are highlighting low ramp-up time and immediate impact.
-
Identify the specific hiring managers at your target companies you want to contact directly.
-
Send low-pressure check-in notes to past interview contacts and warm connections before the week ends.
And if this all seems too overwhelming, let's chat and see how I can make it faster and less cumbersome for you!
Enjoy the rest of your long weekend, recharge, and get ready to seize the fall hiring window.
Warmly,
Alyssa 💛
