Rise & Shine: Are you actually prepared for your interview...or just hoping it goes well?
Hey there,
I’m officially back from Spring Break and for the first time, we didn’t go anywhere. We stayed home… and honestly, it ended up being one of the most relaxing breaks we’ve ever had. No travel logistics, no figuring out dinner plans or rushing to be somewhere at a certain time. Just a week of being present—movies and popcorn, games, home-cooked meals, and a little bit of outside work squeezed in between what felt like nonstop rain.
It got me thinking… we’ll spend weeks planning a trip, where we’re staying, what we’re doing, what we’re eating, but when it comes to interviews, most people are just hoping they “feel ready” when the time comes.
There’s a difference. And it matters more than most people realize.
This Week’s Career Tip
I was working with a client recently who kept saying the same thing over and over:
“I’ve never thought about my experience that way before.”
And honestly, that’s the moment I know something is starting to click.
When we first started, he could only see the gaps. The departments he hadn’t worked in. The experience he thought he was missing. And because of that, he would stumble through key questions—especially “Tell me about yourself”—because he didn’t have a clear, concise way to set the tone from the beginning.
But when we slowed down and really talked it through, everything shifted.
It wasn’t about the specific department. It was about his strategy. It was about how he approached problems and delivered results—no matter where he was sitting in the organization.
Once he saw that, his answers changed. His confidence changed. The way he showed up in conversations changed.
Because these positioning shifts don’t just help you “sound better” in interviews. They help you actually understand your value on a deeper level.
And when you believe it, you don’t have to try so hard to prove it.
The bottom line: When you can clearly connect the dots on how you create impact, confidence follows—and interviews start to feel completely different.
Good Stuff This Week
Here’s what’s had my attention this week:
A simple interview prep shift: Instead of trying to predict every question, prep 3–5 core stories that you can flex across multiple questions. This is exactly why I have clients build out a “story stash”, because the more prepared you are with real examples, the more confident (and natural) you sound.
A question to ask yourself before your next interview:
“What do I want them to remember about me when I leave the room?”
If you can’t answer that clearly, your interview probably won’t either.
Curious—what’s been the hardest part of interviewing for you lately?
A Closer Look
Something I see all the time: people over-preparing content and under-preparing delivery.
Here’s a simple framework I want you to try:
When you’re answering a question, think Present → Example → Impact.
Start with a clear statement (“Here’s how I approach this…”), walk them through a specific example, then land it with the result or takeaway.
This does two things: it keeps you structured (so you don’t ramble), and it makes your answers feel grounded and credible.
And if you’ve ever walked out of an interview thinking, “I know I could do that job, I just don’t think I showed it well…”, this is usually the missing piece.
If you want help building your story stash and actually feeling confident walking into interviews, this is exactly the kind of work I do with clients inside my coaching.
Coming Up
I’m working on something focused specifically on interview prep and how to position yourself as the obvious choice—not just a qualified one. More on that soon.
Before you go:
If you have an interview coming up, hit reply and tell me—I’ll send you one question you should absolutely be ready for.
