Rise & Shine: How to Use Your Open to Work Guide Effectively
Were you recently impacted by layoffs? Or are you simply ready for a new career move?
No matter the reason, navigating the job search can be overwhelming and filled with emotions. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it alone. The key to unlocking new opportunities lies in how well you communicate your value—and that starts with being specific about what you want, not just announcing that you need a job.
That’s why I created the Open to Work Guide—a powerful tool to help you clearly articulate your career goals so that your network knows exactly how they can help you. Whether you use it for a LinkedIn post, a networking message, or as a follow-up document after connecting with someone, this guide makes it easier for others to connect you with the right opportunities.
Breaking Down Your Open to Work Guide
👉 Sample template here.
Here’s how to use each section to craft a compelling and strategic job search announcement:
1. Professional Summary
Start with a concise introduction about who you are and what you bring to the table. Highlight your industry experience, key skills, and the type of roles you excel in.
✅ Example: "Experienced Project Manager with 8+ years in tech and a track record of leading cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact initiatives. Passionate about process improvement and operational efficiency."
2. Ideal Job Titles
Be clear about the roles you are targeting so your network can keep an eye out for the right opportunities.
✅ Example: "Looking for roles such as Program Manager, Operations Manager, or Senior Project Manager."
3. Ideal Companies
List out specific companies you’d love to work for or industries you’re interested in. This gives people in your network a better idea of where to direct you.
✅ Example: "Interested in mission-driven companies in tech, healthcare, or consulting such as Google, Salesforce, or high-growth startups."
4. Key Accomplishments & Certifications
This is your chance to highlight what makes you stand out. Share measurable achievements and relevant certifications that showcase your expertise.
✅ Example: "Led a company-wide process optimization initiative that resulted in a 20% reduction in operational costs. Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt."
5. Core Skills
List the key skills that are most relevant to the jobs you’re targeting. This helps recruiters and hiring managers quickly understand your strengths.
✅ Example: "Project Management | Agile Methodologies | Data Analysis | Change Management"
6. Contact Information
Make it easy for people to connect with you by including your preferred contact methods.
✅ Example: "Email: yourname@email.com | LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/yourname"
