The Career Change Clarity Test
When "Just Push Through" Stops Working
"Maybe I'm just burned out."
That's what I told myself for six months before I finally admitted the truth: I wasn't just tired. I was misaligned.
And there's a massive difference between the two.
Burnout is temporary. It's what happens when you've been running too hard for too long. A vacation, a slower quarter, better boundaries—these can fix burnout.
But misalignment? That's different. That's when who you are and what you do have drifted too far apart. And no amount of PTO is going to fix that.
The hardest part about career change isn't the change itself. It's knowing when it's actually time.
Today, I'm breaking down the three types of misalignment I see with my clients—and how to tell which one you're dealing with.
The Three Types of Career Misalignment
After coaching professionals through career transitions, I've noticed misalignment usually shows up in one of three ways:
1. Role Misalignment: "This isn't the job for me anymore"
This is when the actual work doesn't fit who you've become.
What it looks like:
-
You've mastered your role and feel like you're sleepwalking through it
-
The tasks that used to energize you now feel tedious
-
You catch yourself daydreaming about completely different work
-
Your strengths aren't being used (or worse, your job requires you to lean on your weaknesses)
-
Sunday night dread has become your default
The key question: If you could do this exact role at the perfect company, would you be excited? If the answer is no, you have role misalignment.
2. Environment Misalignment: "Right role, wrong place"
This is when you love what you do, but where or how you're doing it is crushing your soul.
What it looks like:
-
You light up talking about your work but dread your actual workplace
-
The company values feel increasingly foreign to you
-
Your manager's style makes you want to scream into a pillow
-
The pace (too fast or too slow) doesn't match your rhythm
-
You'd take the same role somewhere else in a heartbeat
The key question: If you could redesign your current role at a different company or team, would you thrive? If yes, you have environment misalignment.
3. Evolution Misalignment: "I've outgrown all of it"
This is when you've fundamentally changed as a person, and both your role AND your environment feel like clothes that don't fit anymore.
What it looks like:
-
Your values have shifted (what mattered at 25 doesn't matter at 35)
-
Life changes have reordered your priorities (kids, caregiving, health, etc.)
-
You've discovered new strengths or interests you can't explore where you are
-
Both the work AND the workplace feel constraining
-
You fantasize about a complete reinvention
The key question: Does any version of your current professional life—role, company, or industry—feel like it fits who you're becoming? If no, you have evolution misalignment.
Burnout vs. Misalignment: The Critical Difference
Here's how to tell if you're dealing with temporary burnout or true misalignment:
Burnout feels like:
-
"I need a break"
-
"If I could just catch up..."
-
"After this project/quarter/year, things will calm down"
-
"I love what I do, I'm just exhausted"
Misalignment feels like:
-
"I can't do this for another year"
-
"This isn't who I am anymore"
-
"Even when I'm rested, I don't want to go back"
-
"Success here doesn't feel like success to me"
The ultimate test? Take a week off.
If you come back refreshed and ready, you were burned out. If you come back and immediately feel the weight settling back on your shoulders before you even open your laptop—that's misalignment.
Why This Matters Right Now
We're in a unique moment. The last few years have forced many of us to question everything about how we work and what we want from our careers.
But here's what I'm seeing: People are making reactive career changes when they're burned out, not strategic ones when they're misaligned.
The result? They jump from one misaligned situation to another. Different company, same problems. New role, same Sunday night dread.
That's why clarity comes first. You need to know what kind of misalignment you're dealing with before you can fix it.
Your Misalignment Assessment
Take five minutes and honestly answer these questions:
About Your Role:
-
Do you feel energized by at least 50% of your daily tasks?
-
Are your core strengths being utilized?
-
Can you see yourself doing this type of work for another 2-3 years?
About Your Environment:
-
Do your company's values align with your personal values?
-
Does your manager's style bring out your best work?
-
Does the pace and culture fit your working style?
About Your Evolution:
-
Does your current career path align with who you're becoming?
-
Are your changing life priorities compatible with your work?
-
Do you feel like you're growing toward something, or just enduring?
Scoring:
-
Mostly "yes" = You might be burned out, not misaligned
-
"No" to role questions = Role misalignment
-
"No" to environment questions = Environment misalignment
-
"No" across the board = Evolution misalignment
What Comes Next
Once you know what type of misalignment you're dealing with, the path forward becomes clearer:
-
Role misalignment → Start exploring what roles would better use your strengths
-
Environment misalignment → Focus on finding the right culture fit
-
Evolution misalignment → Give yourself permission to reimagine everything
This week, I'll be diving deeper into each of these paths. We'll talk about what you need to know before making a change, the questions that lead to clarity, and how to set yourself up for success on the other side.
Because here's what I know for sure: Staying in misalignment isn't noble. It's not "being grateful for what you have" or "being responsible."
It's slowly dimming your light. And the world needs what you have to offer, in the right role, at the right place, at the right time in your evolution.
